In 1998, Walt Disney World® Resort added Animal Kingdom® Park to its family of theme parks…and boy is it special. Built upon 500 acres, Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Park is home to 1,700 animals representing 250 species throughout the park. The different lands to explore include Africa, Asia, Camp Minnie-Mickey, DinoLand USA®, Discovery Island, Rafki’s Planet Watch and Oasis.
Africa welcomes you to villages and thatched huts. On your visit you will travel to areas Disney’s® Imagineers have replicated, such as a fortress found in Zanzibar, a private home from Kenya, thatched huts originally crafted by the Zulu of South Africa and an East African port that caters to tourists before boarding their safari excursion…the ‘Kilimanjaro Safari’, a 1.2 mile train ride.
Asia was added in 1999 and the 'Maharaja Jungle Trek’ is an adventurous walking tour that takes you past komodo dragons, deer, birds and bats. Next you come across the ‘Kali River Rapids’ and ‘Expedition Everest’ – a rollercoaster with a twist!
Discovery Island is not to be missed; this is where to find The Tree of Life. From a distance it appears to be a very real, thriving, growing tree, but once you get close you can see this 145 foot “tree” has nearly 400 animals carved into its imposing structure. Inside the base of the Tree of Life the artists have camouflaged a theatre for ‘It’s Tough To Be A Bug’.
If you travel to Disney’s Animal Kingdom® in the summer months, you will find the area sparsely dotted with trees – not a lot of shade to be found, so, bring plenty of liquids and come early in the day. Maybe plan on the ‘Kali River Rapids’ in the afternoon!! As with any Disney® park, food and drink are easy to find – unlike the real African safari - they are not mirages!
